WINNING OVER THE WORLD AROUND ME
Tip 2: Script out your PPT

We all have sat through painful presentations in which a presenter fantastically crashes and burns despite equipping himself with cosmetically pleasing slides. Some gaffes merely irritate. For instance, spending too much time on the first slide, asking after every slide, “do you have any questions?” or sprinkling um or uh after every three words distracts the audience from substance. However, certain blunders cause irredeemable and lastingdamage to the presenter’s credibility. These notable death traps include muddled messages, flawed logic and inconsistent or wrong numbers.

Do not sell yourself short by showing up to your presentation to casually talk through the slides. Set yourself apart and extrude unmistakable self-assurance that you have full command of your material. How do you get there? Follow these three steps after your slides are done.

Step 1: Strategize your verbal delivery by scripting out, word by word, in natural, spoken language.

• For each slide, start with the key message and plan which illustration to highlight in which order

• Correct errors (numbers, typos, copy/paste…) and inconsistencies (wording, format, alignment…)

• Reorder, enhance or kill slides to improve the overall flow

Step 2: Refine your verbal delivery by repeatedly reading your script out loud to hear yourself

• Fix verbal speed bumps, replace awkward wording and eliminate redundancies

• Underline in your script intentional points of emphasis (e.g., tone or speed of speech)

• Repeat until you can visualize each slide and present in its entirely without slides

Step 3: Prepare to address the difficult questions

• Earmark which slides the questions you would like to avoid will be asked

• Ask the experts to fully understand the underlying issues if needed

• Script out exactly how you will answer with the conclusion first followed by backup if warranted

Confidence originates from knowing your stuff cold, which in turn comes from either intrinsic brilliance or disciplined over-preparation. Spend less time perfecting your slides and invest a lot more time scripting and rehearsing your presentation to crystalize your messages and eliminate verbosity, i.e., downsize a dozing novel to an elegant poem.

Finally, I offer you a bonus tip to the non-native speakers who dread presentations in English. “Speak”your concise, pin-pointed script but add a few intentional filler words (i.e., um and uh) to make the audience believe that you are presenting impromptu
