WINNING OVER THE WORLD AROUND ME
Tip 15: Thermometer or thermostat?

What is the difference between a thermometer and thermostat? One measures the temperature, and the other controls it to a desired level. The other difference is that the former reacts to the ambient temperature, and the latter is immune by it.

How do you behave in your workplace? Do your emotions oscillate wildly between hot and cold like a thermometer? Are you flying high one minute but scraping the bottom the next? And are you totally engaged in the morning but then want to quit at the end of the day? You are certainly not alone. I can think of at least two reasons for such erratic rollercoaster rides.

You vs. others: First is the obsessive comparison of yourself to others. You may preoccupy yourself with unhelpful thoughts such as “are my colleagues moving up faster than I” or “how does my compensation stack up against others?” When you are trailblazing through successive promotions, you feel invincible and act arrogantly. But you will feel small at times because inevitably there is always someone who is doing better than you. Even when you are progressing at a normal pace, you may feel as if you are being left behind.

Insecurity: Second is your constant need to be reassured by your supervisor or colleagues that you are doing a good job. If your boss pats you on your back and blurts out “well done” after an epic presentation, the two weeks of sleepless nights seem entirely worth the sacrifice. However, if he challenges your bullet-proof logic, criticizes your insightful recommendation or robs you of well-deserved praises, you lie awake and pensively question your entire existence.

Since these volatile ups and downs are often unpredictable and can harm not only you but also your team, you must radically overhaul your mindset. Here are two of my suggestions.

You vs. you: Instead of trying to prove that you are better than others by gauging yourself against them, why not make that target your full potential? In another words, work towards a constructive framework to compare your current self to your improved, future self. Here is a telling example. Usain Bolt can run the 100-meter dash in 9.6 seconds and you in 20 seconds. Rather than setting an unachievable (and demoralizing) goal to beat Mr. Lightening, set an ambitious target of 20% reduction in your run time in six months. Despite the rigorous training, you will cross the finish line in 16 seconds and still way behind Usain. But think about what you have achieved – a whopping 20% improvement from your starting point, which is an unthinkable accomplishment even for the world record holder.

Self-confidence: Only you and your conscience know whether you actually did your best or slacked off when no one was looking. Whether it is a single presentation or year-long performance, reflect on your work and reward yourself with a good mark if you have truly given your all. If your supervisor happens to disagree, accept his assessment at face value and shrug off his “opinion” with a simple thought, “it is he who failed to evaluate me correctly.”

A wise man once said, “the richest man is not he who has the most, but he who needs the least.” Said differently, your personal values and conscious choices, not the social standards, determine your fulfillment. I conclude with two calls to action. One, stop comparing yourself to others. You are an original. You are unique. Forget about “keeping up with the Joneses,” because it will only lead to a disappointing dead end. Two, trust that honesty and diligence will bear fruit in the long run. So, do not hang on to every word uttered by these imperfect judges of your work. If you keep to these two suggestions, your body and soul will be healthier, and you will be at last emancipated from the bondage of meaningless noise around you!
