WINNING THE WORLD AROUND ME
Tip 17: Foot-in-mouth prevention

What comes out of one’s mouth is entirely within his control. He controls when to speak or not to speak, how and with which tone to speak and how much or little to speak. He must voluntarily open his mouth in order for his words to flow out. In contrast, his colleagues have two ears which are involuntarily opened at all times. Therefore, as the speaker he is ultimately accountable for the impact he has on the listeners. Yet he recklessly blurts out toxic words despite the ill effect they have on his colleagues. In fact, he often deflects the blame on to his team for not understanding or reacting too sensitively when conversations turn for the worse.

Picture a freshly painted white wall. You hammer a nail through this wall and then remove it, because you did not like the position of the painting. Although this nail has been pulled out, it still left a gaping hole on the wall. Similarly, having said hurtful words and then saying sorry does not result in complete vindication. Let us suppose an outspoken colleague bulldozes his ideas through to unilaterally implement his plan without listening to his team’s suggestions. Sensing that their feelings have been hurt and collaboration destroyed, he says belatedly “I am sorry. I did not mean to be so impatient.” His team may accept his apologies. Unfortunately, his appalling words may be forgiven but rarely forgotten.

Imagine you are involved in a heated argument with your spouse. You hurl a pillow in frustration, but it hits the sharp corner of your dresser and it “explodes” with all the feathers flying in all directions. After you two make up, you pick up the downs one piece at a time and try to put them back into your pillow. I wonder if the original fluffiness will ever be restored.
Likewise, once words have been uttered, you cannot take them back. They spread and leave their marks. You simply cannot wiggle out of what you have said with excuses such as “I did not mean it,” “I overreacted,” or “I was only kidding.”

We say things we should not have said and then regret afterwards. To never to repeat the same blunder would be impossible, but we should aspire to reduce the frequency and lower the magnitude of our verbal assaults. Here are two pragmatic tips to avoid the unwanted foot-in-mouth.

One, resist the temptation to react immediately. Sometimes a deep breath is all that is required. However, in more infuriating situations, sleeping on it overnight is highly recommended. Too often we raise our voices, intentionally speak with aggressive tone or resort to vicious expressions. Although these words may have been justifiably used to right the wrong, nevertheless they result in wounded egos and battered teamwork. We are familiar with the phrase, “time is of the essence,” but perhaps in these circumstances, content is more of the essence.

Two, speak to everybody as if you are speaking to your boss who has the authority to sack you. Because your words have consequences, you will choose your words carefully and discriminate how much to say when. You would not dare to cut him off when he is talking or use dismissive language with him. You certainly would take great care to ensure that your words would be correctly interpreted. In short, you will restrain your impulsive tendencies because you must.

We know the immense power of vile words. Piercing words said in anger may long outlast the disagreement between the two. Indiscriminating words spoken may humiliate and permanently crush the spirit of others. These insensitive and profane words imprison people in darkness. Which, then, are the words that could light up this darkness? Words spoken with kindness, generosity, humility, courtesy, restraint, joy and consistency! Mother Teresa once said, “kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless."
