WINNING OVER THE WORLD AROUND ME
Tip 19: No more lies

Comparing the sixteenth and the current forty-fifth President of the United States in terms of honesty and integrity, Abraham Lincoln will undoubtedly come ahead of Donald Trump. Lincoln was first called "Honest Abe" when he was a store clerk. This nickname is based on a famous story of young Lincoln closing the shop and running to the customer’s house to deliver the correct change when he realized he had shortchanged the customer even by a few pennies. In stark contrast, Trump led his entire life conceiving, spreading and compounding outrageous lies. He lied (and still lies) about his academic performance at his graduate school, his physical conditions to avoid military service, his financial disclosures to avoid paying taxes and the list goes on. Trump is slowly destroying the very foundation on which the US was founded.

Truth matters and lie corrupts. However, we continue to walk a fine line between truths and lies. Sometimes we cannot avoid bending the truth a bit, but we nevertheless regret it afterwards. There are at least two good reasons why you should not lie. First, you will look foolish when truth comes out. You may have been untruthful to evade confrontations or to win an argument. When facing irrefutable facts that contradict your initial lies, you are cornered to lie again or reluctantly walk back what you have said. Why would you subject yourself to this lose-lose situation? Second, you do not have to keep track of what you have said. Your life is already complicated and upkeeping healthy relationships with your stakeholders is a full-time job. If you told one flavor of lies to one set of colleagues and a different flavor to another, you better remember which lie you told to whom in which sequence. These mental acrobatics are energy-drainers! Why not be “lazy” and always tell the truth? Then all you need to do is to playback what is stored in your memory.

Truth always prevails. What then can we do to not resort to lies? Here are two pragmatic ideas. First, be principled and keep to it. As a concrete example, strictly adhere to your company’s expense reimbursement policy. Under no circumstances, should you confuse business from non-business expenses regardless of the amount. When you pay for a business dinner attended by both clients and non-clients (e.g., friends), then only submit the portion directly related to the business at hand. Second, do not be technically correct but morally upright. When you are tempted to rationalize that no harm is done as long as you do not get caught or people do not find out, you should really listen to your conscience. Lies may start innocuously small in the beginning, but they tend to swell in size and malice because bigger and more implausible lies are required to cover up.

Honesty and integrity should be uncompromising values for us all. We are inherently bothered when we lie or cheat. We hide in darkness for the fear of truths coming out to light. We add to our lies even greater lies to shield ourselves from being exposed. But you already know how to break this vicious cycle. Let your high principles and moral standard guide you to tell the truth always and in all ways. Then you will be at peace and not suffer from inner conflicts. Keep in mind that the best lies are telling the truth!
