WINNING OVER THE WORLD AROUND ME
Tip 6: Ready, aim, fire

You spent weeks perfecting your pitch with beautifully orchestrated slides to impress your potential client. You are ready to highlight your firm’s deep expertise, global network and enviable client list. You leisurely leave your office around 10:15 to your 11:00 meeting, but first you stop to grab your non-fat latte, because without the morning rush hour, you still should arrive there with five minutes to spare.

For some unknown reason, the world is against you today. You were stuck in traffic, arrived later than planned and parked three blocks away since all nearby spots were taken. With 15 minutes already passed the start time, you sprint to the meeting and stumble into the room, out of breath and glistening with perspiration. With only 30 minutes remaining, you fire up your notebook, but the dreaded blue screen of memory dump appears. While the computer reboots, you desperately try to break through the uncomfortable silence, but your brain draws a big, fat blank. The havoc continues. The meeting ends, you know, not well.

Making a good first impression at an important meeting does not just happen. Likewise, unless you are born a sniper, piercing through the bull’s eye is not a given. Even a trained marksman standing in front of a target goes through a routine of “ready, aim, fire.” What if we apply this same ritual to the science of imparting an unforgettable mark on others in the very first meeting?

Ready: The first step is all about purposeful and meticulous preparation. You first study your target client, identify its burning issues and align your capabilities to tangible solutions. Claiming how good you are lacks relevance; convincing how good you will be for them packs the right punch. You then research the people you will meet and know more about them than their mothers. You must dig beyond the readily available LinkedIn profiles and unearth their tendencies and interests only a resolute investigator or networking czar could find. These personal gems are crucial, since they often act as essential catalysts to striking a friendly connection.

Aim: The second step is entirely dedicated to focusing on controlling the controllable. For instance, you can set your time of departure. Since traffic accidents, car trouble or other unforeseeable events may cause delays and sweaty arm pits, arriving at least an hour before the ultra-important meetings is highly recommended. Rather than reaching the destination just in time and madly rushing into the meeting, why not find a quiet place or nearby coffee shop and mentally walk through the presentation and double-check that all the props are fully operational?

Fire: The final step is where the rubber meets the road. It is show time! Ice break with the meeting attendees, especially with the decision maker, by casually mentioning something obscure but favorable about them to win over the crowd even before your presentation begins. Speak like an insider by zeroing in their pain points and sharing your insights to unequivocally demonstrate how their partnering with you can save the day. Refrain at all cost from hard selling, because if you delivered a compelling pitch and connected with the key stake holders, then they will call you.

Let us pause and note a caveat here. Without the why, blindly applying the “ready, aim, fire” will relegate it to yet another means to an end. The reason for using this approach should be much more than avoiding tardiness, amusing people with interesting factoids or impressing others with clever insights. A better reason (or higher cause) should be the respectful consideration towards others. We certainly do not want our time wasted by other’s oversights or attending irrelevant meetings. Then should we also not misuse their precious time and do unto others as we would have them do unto us?
